There should be check boxes by the things that you want backed up, and no extra check boxes hanging around on things that seem to be unplugged right now (uncheck those).Īfter that you'll need to allow Backblaze to have some time to sort it's brain out, like 2 or 3 hours, but it won't use any of your bandwidth.Ģa) I use Syncthing to share files between computers, I was curious if Backblaze operates in a similar fashion. Please don't think you can skip this step, or somehow "rotate through" your drives, you need to connect all of them at once.ī) Open up the Backblaze Control Panel, click on the "Settings." button, and make sure the "Hard Drives Selected for Backup" are correct. Whenever you do anything with your external drives (like swap drive letters), it's simple, but VERY IMPORTANT to to both of these steps, and don't skip #A, and did I mention don't skip #A?Ī) Connect all of the hard drives you want backed up going forward to the computer at the same time.

:-)Ĭould I simply replace it with the second external drive and just reassign its letter as G and the Backblaze program would be none the wiser?Īlmost. Sorry for the wordy/lengthy questions, but I really appreciate it for those who took the time to read and answer them! Cheers.ĭisclaimer: I work at Backblaze so I'm biased and others should chime in. (That said, I don't mind if they have to inevitably raise their monthly prices year after year, but the major selling point is unlimited backup). There's a saying that "nothing good ever lasts forever", but I'm hoping Backblaze can prove us wrong in that regard. Backblaze's personal backup almost sounds too good to be true with its very affordable prices YET still allowing unlimited backup. With big well-known companies like Google and Dropbox, you can probably rest assured knowing that they won't go under anytime soon and take their cloud/backup services with them. (a question more for the reddit backblaze community unless official Backblaze reps want to chime in):ĥ) What are you thoughts on the longevity of Backblaze services? For example, I'm reading from some posts that some users are coming from Crashplan after they ended their personal backup and only have services for commercial/business purposes. but I don't know if it has the needed specs to upload efficiently into the data centers.

is this what the inherit backup state feature is for?Ĥ) Is there a recommended CPU/RAM spec for personal backup? I was thinking about transferring my personal backup to a laptop that is solely dedicated for Backblaze so it will be on 24/7.

Now, if I rename a file or change how folders are organized/structured, will Backblaze adjust accordingly or just see these changes as "new" and copy these BUT also keep the previous versions? In other words, is Backblaze essentially mirroring the drives and folders that I specify?Ģb) (piggybacking on the previous question.) What if my local data got hit with ransomware? Would these malware-encrypted files then get uploaded into personal backup? Is this where version history comes into play? For example, if I know the time/date of when I got hit with the ransomware, I can simply retrieve all my data at a point in time before that specific time/date of the attack?ģ) I understand the limitation of personal backup that you can only backup from one computer (without paying additional fees to add other computers to your account), but what identifying feature does the program use to "tag" the computer in question? What if I changed the cpu/mobo and/or reinstall Windows which would essentially make this a "different" computer from Backblaze's point of view. (For example, if I delete a file locally, Backblaze will delete its copy as well).

(Another bonus is the encryption key for added security which I've saved into KeepassXC and have saved copies of this database in multiple locations including another cloud service.) Before I pull the trigger, some final questions (I'm sure I'll have more, but these are what I have off the top of my head):ġ) I finally started following the "3-2-1" backup rule so I have two physical copies of my data (and now have the third offsite with Backblaze!) If an external drive (let's sav "drive G" dies), could I simply replace it with the second external drive and just reassign its letter as G and the Backblaze program would be none the wiser?Ģa) I use Syncthing to share files between computers, I was curious if Backblaze operates in a similar fashion.

I'm nearing the end of my 15-day trial period, and I have to say that I'm liking it so far! The main selling points of personal backup for me are its relatively affordable price yet still allowing unlimited backup.
